Many people now create and share content on the Internet or blend services from various sites in their daily tasks, reflecting the medium’s clear evolution from a place for simply consuming websites.

The upcoming version of Microsoft Corp’s Internet Explorer, version 8, embraces those trends by adding an “Activities” feature that makes all that easier for PC users. It’s still in a “beta” test mode meant mostly for Web designers to try out.

Intel names new chip Atom

Intel Corp, has picked “Atom” as the new brand name for its latest new family of low-power processors. Atom will power digital devices, that will power mobile Internet devices and ultra low-cost and small notebook and desktop personal computers. Atom is based on a new micro architecture which is designed for small devices and low-power consumption. The chip is less than 25 square millimeters, and 11 of the chip’s dies the slivers of silicon with 47 million transistors each.

Intel sees a big market for the Internet connected devices that can fit in one’s pocket and for what it is calling the netbook, a low-cost PC costing around $250.

Microsoft Gives Students Access to Technical Software at No Charge

Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates today will unveil a software giveaway that will ultimately provide millions of college and high school students around the world with access to the latest Microsoft developer and designer tools at no charge to unlock their creative potential and set them on the path to academic and career success.

The Microsoft DreamSpark student program (http://channel8.msdn.com) makes available, at no charge, a broad range of development and design software for download. The program is now available to more than 35 million college students in Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. Broad global coverage, as well as an expansion of the program to high school students around the world, potentially reaching up to 1 billion students worldwide, will continue throughout the next year. Gates will share details with students and faculty at Stanford University as part of a U.S. and Canada college tour
that kicks off today.

Apple® released Mac OS® X Leopard on sale Friday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. Leopard is packed with more than 300 new features and introduces a brand new desktop with Stacks, a new way to easily access files from the Dock; a redesigned Finder that lets users quickly browse and share files between multiple Macs; Quick Look, a new way to instantly see files without opening an application; Spaces, an intuitive new feature used to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; and Time Machine, an effortless way to automatically back up everything on a Mac®.“Leopard, the sixth major release of Mac OS X, is the best upgrade we’ve ever released,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “And everyone gets the ‘Ultimate’ version, packed with all the new innovative features, for just $129.”

Leopard’s new desktop includes the redesigned 3D Dock with Stacks, a new way to organize files for quick and easy access with just one click. Google loses Facebook to Microsoft

Microsoft Corp beat out Google Inc in a battle to invest in socialising website Facebook, agreeing to pay $240 million for a 1.6 per cent stake in the Web phenomenon.

Microsoft also clinched exclusive rights to sell ads on Facebook outside of the United States as part of the investment that valued Facebook at $15 billion — on par with the market capitalisations of retailer Gap Inc and hotel chain Marriott International Inc.

Analysts said Microsoft paid a steep price on a bet that the three-year-old company would be able to transform itself into a hub for all sorts of Web activity. (more…)

Microsoft Virtual Earth- 3DVIA

Dassault Systèmes (DS), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, and Microsoft Corp. today launched Microsoft® Virtual Earth™-3DVIA (Technology Preview). This free online application, developed by Dassault Systèmes, allows consumers to imagine, create realistic 3-D models - such as buildings and structures - and then share them through Microsoft Virtual Earth and online communities.
